A few years ago, they made a lot of noise during their battle against a local, corrupt sheriff. Both aspects of their lives are, once again, making waves on a national level.

According to Arpaio, his aggressive manner was because he was the “toughest sheriff in America.” In reality, he was only tough on emigrants and Latinos. He mistreated jail inmates, had little control of his sheriff’s office, and was involved in some unsavory business deals. In short, he was the “worst sheriff in America.”

After New Times began reporting on him, he immediately began trying to shut them up. There were several reports of him abusing his power to get his critics silent. Fortunately, Lacey and Larkin didn’t back down so easily. Unfortunately, that made the sheriff madder.

He eventually had them arrested and taken to separate jails, where he could interrogate them as long as he wanted. Following their run-in with the sheriff, they sued Maricopa County and used the settlement to create the Frontera Fund.
